“Recently, it seems several of our students have been affected by family chaos, peer drama, or simply poor decisions. For one of my students – who spent much of last school year in facilities for behavioral issues – the 2020-21 school year had so far proven very successful. She earned acceptable grades and all A’s her very first grading period back. Her behavior was consistent and she had even been trying to help her peers with their decision-making. Unfortunately, I recently received an email notifying me that my student was missing from school – after some outreach to her family, I was informed that she was once again back in a facility. While I don’t know all that happened, the student and I have decided to focus on the future. We will view this bump in the road as a re-boot for decision-making and positive choices. So far she has remained positive, but we do not know when or if she will return. She has burned a few bridges and is now awaiting a new foster family. We are now pen pals – if we can’t chat in-person we will chat online. I have tried to teach her not to give up on people or life, so now it’s my turn to practice what I preach – I will not give up on her.”
